After the disappointment of last week's rainout, we were happy to have a nice day to get our official first game of the season in. There was sun and bugs aplenty, as well as a plethora of Bruisers. Our thanks to Nagin for being willing to suit up if needed. The Bruisers mounted an amazing third inning attack, scoring 11 runs to move ahead, leaving the DMs stunned. We weren't able to stay ahead, but when all was said and done, we only lost by one run, and there zero mercies from either side.
DM outs came thusly: In the first inning Nancy(P) fielded a dribbler and threw it to ScottM(1B), Jeff(CF) fielded a shallow blooper and threw it to Simon(3B) who was able to keep his toe on third base to force the runner, then Jose(SS) threw a grounder to ScottM(1B). In the second inning Jose(SS) fielded a grounder and flipped it to KarenC(2B) to force the runner, then Paul(3B) threw a grounder to Ron(1B), and then Gerardo(LF) caught a pop fly. Play of the game came in the third inning when Gerardo(LF) made a great catch followed by an even better throw straight to Ron(1B) for a double play (whoohoo!), and then Simon(3B) threw a grounder to Ron(1B) for the third out. In the fourth inning Simon(SS) got a grounder to Shane(1B), then Simon(SS) fielded a grounder and stepped on second base to force that runner, and then ScottM(RF) caught a big fly ball to right center field.
Bruiser offense looked to be in mid-season form, despite it being our first actual game of the season. Home runs were hit by ScottE and Simon, and triples were hit by KarenC and Jose. We batted all the way around, plus one, in the third inning. RBIs were earned by KarenC, ScottM, Jeff (2), Gerardo, Nancy (2), Jose (2), BobbyJoe, Simon (2), Nora, EricB, Shane, Ron, Nimisha, and ScottE. That's almost everyone! Nimisha and Martin both had good hits to start their softball careers. Paul gets a Sneaky Feet award for stretching his single to a double in the third inning.
Our next game is TUESDAY May 4. We will be home team against the Deep Space Cadets. I already know we'll be missing Amy, Liza and Nora. Everyone else please be sure that I know if you're coming or not (esp. the gals; we'll need the rest of you to play).
