Where were all the Bruisers? Come on gang, we need you to come play and cheer! We'd have 'way more highlights and more accurate accounting of the other team's runs if there were more of us. To those of you who have expressed concern about our 19-player games... we've not had a single one this year, and it would be nice to have something closer to 19 than 10! And: What time is game time? 5:30. What time do you need to be at the field? 5:15. Thank you. :)
After calling people to find out where they were, we finally got the game started 20 minutes late with just nine Bruisers. It was a very nice (albeit horribly bright) afternoon, with the teasing starting even before the game began (after we helped them measure the field properly and set the bases & cones). The Titans came loaded for bear, putting up their big huge guys to hit big huge hits (very impressive, I might add, esp. with the guy who "just learned how to hit" hitting them almost to the second baseman on the OTHER field -- I wanna learn to hit like that!). Suffice it say, our outfielders got lots of running in, especially Photon and Anders. I'd say the main problem was the gnats -- there were plenty of them everywhere. Yuck. Next week bring masks.
Anyway, people on the blanket were none, so highlight notes are relatively few, but here we go... Rob(1B) saved KarenC(2B)'s bacon in the first inning when she fielded a screaming grounder and then threw it high to first base -- fortunately not higher than Rob's glove could go. Later in the game, however, EricB(3B) would find that while Rob was tall enough to field KarenC's high throws, he was not tall enough to catch EricB's high throws. Rob made a great catch of a line drive with the sun in his eyes for the second out in the first inning... then we hit mercy, which we pretty much lived with for the rest of the game. In the second inning, Ron(SS) made a nice catch behind KarenC(2B) (THANK YOU, RON!). In the third inning, EricB(3B) made a nice fly catch, and in the fourth inning Rob made a great running over-the-shoulder juggling catch for the final out. EricB demonstrated that he can follow instructions when Ron yelled at him to let a ball roll foul... which it did by ! about an inch. Good boy!
Offensively, their offense was bigger than our offense. ScottE had a double, but was then tripped by the third baseman when he tagged ScottE at the ankles. Anders gets the "You were Sooooo lucky!" award for his run from second to third during which the shortstop accompanied him about 15 feet before trying to flip it to his third baseman, but hit Anders in the shoulder instead so the ball bounced away and Anders made it safely to third. Emmanuell gets the "Doh!" award for being thrown out at third after trying to stretch his double. We had no home runs or triples, and RBIs were earned by Nancy, Jes, Emmanuell (2), and KarenT. I know that's only five... I think the other one was by Ron.
Our next game is next Wednesday, May 16 against the TOADs. We will be the home team on field HN (dirt). I don't know of anyone who won't be there, so be sure to let me know if you'll be there or if you won't.
Have a great week, everyone! Gooooo Bruisers!!
