On a beautiful (non-rainy, at least!) day when Bruiser ranks were depleted by, well, almost anything but softball, enough begging was initiated to give us ten to start the game. Things looked good after an awesome second inning when the Bruisers batted around, mercied the Deep Space Cadets, and held them there for innings 2-5. The mercy ruled came and went several times during the game until defense tired in the sixth inning, and the Cadets started to catch up. With darkness favoring the Cadets (they insisted on playing the seventh inning; quoth Cadet Doug Strain "Why stop? We can catch up!"), they took the lead in the top of the seventh, Bruiser offense couldn't bring us all the way back, and we lost by one run. We did make several really good plays, with our main defensive highlight being a multi-player relay in one of the middle innings involving Scott, Bob and half the infield to get an out at home plate (protested by the Cadet's third base coach who sent the runner in).

Hitting was awesome, with every Bruiser and pseudo-Bruiser getting at least one hit (most getting at least two). Big hitters were Bob (2) and Mark with home runs, and Karen and Scott with back-to back triples. Runs were knocked in by Karen (3 or 4), Scott, Andy (2), Jeff, Gretchen (2), Joe, Andrew, Bob (5), Shaunna (3 or 4), Charlie (2), and Mark (4). I know that doesn't add up to 32, but scorekeeping got confusing when the women had to be juggled through the lineup in innings 4-7 and not all RBIs were marked in.

Our next game is Wednesday May 27 against the Homers. They're already planning to kick our butts (see their game report from Wednesday 5/20 on their web page; you can get there via the C League page from the Bruiser's page). We won't be getting any personnel assistance from them (including Scott), so we need to be able to field a whole team of Bruisers all by ourselves (minimum ten players with at least three women). Please let me know whether or not you can make it to the game.

See you Wednesday!
Karen :)
