BRUISERS WIN!!! BRUISERS WIN!!! BRUISERS WIN!!! BRUISERS WIN!!!

Bruisers vs. Eclectic Eccentrics, May 26, 2010

Bruisers: KarenC, Jeff, Randy, Nimisha, ScottM, Nora (aka "The Gazelle"), Jose, EricG, Ann, Simon, Ron, Nancy, ScottE and Jes

Bruiser fans: Gerardo - DL (Sam, I swear we didn't do it to him - he came in that way!)

Victorious diners at Barn Burner: EricB, Nancy, Ron, Ann, and KarenC

Bruises: Barbara, the EE pitcher, who had no chance to avoid the line drive to her feet, and to her credit stayed with the ball... and threw out Jeff just before he made it to first base.

Quotes:
"One of you needs to bat for me" - Nimisha, after running for Ann and Jes in the same inning
"Why are you guys being so stingy? This is C League"! - Mr. Crankypants EE first baseman when he didn't understand what was going on in the bottom of the last inning. Clearly, he needed a nap.

It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood, and a great afternoon for a softball game. Dallas Raines was totally wrong. The Eccentrics were a bit lost without their regular manager, altho their stand-in manager did the best she could. They show up, however, with not one, but two illegal bats - both red Worth Insanity bats, neither of which was the model listed as the exception on the non-conforming bat list. Listen, bub, I don't care how long you claim to have been playing with that bat, if it's illegal, it leaves the game, and now that you know it's illegal, you should leave it at home from now on. Both of you. If that ball that hit your pitcher had come off of an illegal bat, her ankle might be broken, not just bruised. I'm just sayin'.

Eccentric outs came thusly: In the first inning, Jeff(LF) caught two big fly balls, then Jose(SS) got a grounder to Ron (1B). In the second inning, Ron(1B) made a nice unassisted out, Jose(SS) caught a pop up, and then Ron(1B) made a great backwards-over-the-shoulder running catch. In the third, Jose(SS) fielded a slow grounder and tagged the runner going into second base, then he caught a soft line drive, and then Nancy(P) fielded a dribbler and tossed it to Ron(1B). In the fourth inning, ScottM(RF) caught a fly ball at the treeline, Jose(SS) caught a line drive, and then Nancy(P) fielded a full-swing bunt and got it to Ron(1B). In the fifth inning, Simon(3B) caught an infield popup, Jose(SS) caught the next infield popup, and then Jose(SS) fielded a grounder and got it to Ron(1B) for the final out.

Offensive feats (in the official innings) include home runs by Jose, Ann (run out by Nora), and Simon, and triples by Randy and Nora. RBIs were earned by Scott, Nora, Jose (2), Ann, Simon, Nancy (3), and Jes (2). Jose narrowly lost a hit in a great EE play when Jose's fly ball to left center field bounced out of the left fielder's glove and was caught by the short fielder before it hit the ground. Blooper reel stars: KarenC, ScottM, and EricB. You all know what you did. ;)

Lessons learned:
1) Glove ALL the way down to the ground
2) Turn out or go straight at first unless you're confident they won't throw you out
3) Get to first base before checking on whoever you might have hit with the ball
4) Don't surprise the first baseman with a pickoff move

Our next game is TUESDAY, June 1, the day after the holiday. This is the makeup of our earlier rainout, so we'll be home team against the Paper Tigers on field HN (dirt).

Have a fun holiday weekend!

Karen :)

*After the end of the fifth inning, the EE pseudo-manager asked us if we could stay to hit the bottom of our half so her late arriving players could get some fielding practice (huh?). After some confusion, we went to bat, sending ten runners to the plate and scoring an additional seven runs, including a three-RBI home run by ScottM before she said "oh, let's just do one out instead of three" and they quit at one out. RBIs in the unofficial half-inning were scored by Randy, Scott(3), Ann (2) and Simon.
