Bruisers vs. Crawdads, May 28, 2008
Bruisers: KarenC, EricB, Ron, Amy, ScottM, Nancy, Rich, Dave, Ann, EricG, Jes, Anders (aka "the Speedy Swede"), Nora, and ScottE. Thanks Rich & Dave for helping us out!
Bruiser fans: none :(
Bruiser diners who went to Corner Bakery: EricB, Nancy, ScottM, Anders, Ron, KarenC, Nora, and Amy. After several visits in a row, people were pretty much over Crown City, may she rest in peace.
Bruiser casualties: Amy's brand-new manicure
Weird stuff heard from the field:
"Swing at the little white ball, not the big yellow one in the sky" (Ron, while at 1B)
"I'm just sending everybody home" (EricG on coaching 3B)

We had a nice, sunny afternoon, and the teams (once they finished forming up) played a very even and balanced game, with both teams taking turns having the lead. Much more fun than some blow-out game, we thought.
Our hitting was much better today. After the Crawdads tied up the game in top of the fifth inning, the Bruisers created ourselves a brief hit parade with seven batters in a row getting base hits. We had no home runs, but got triples from KarenC (can I get a "whoo-hoo"!) and ScottE, and Nancy even legged out a double. Everyone who came up to bat got at least one hit. RBIs scored by KarenC (2), EricB (2), Amy (2), ScottM, Nancy, Rich (2), Ann (2), EricG, Anders, Nora, and ScottE (3). KarenC was robbed of a hit when Big Bad BobbyJoe caught her line drive over first base. Rich gets the night's Sneaky Feet award for squeeking into second base in the third inning. In the fifth inning, with someone screaming "What are you doing?!" from the sidelines, EricG narrowly made it home, successfully evading being run down between third and home (who was coaching third??) on Nora's single.
Offensively, we had some good moves, too. A couple of the at-bats took a really long time, but they did shorten up as the game went on. Nancy and Karen had lots of plays at pitcher -- kudos to Ron (a very busy guy tonight) for catching all our throws. In the first inning, EricB(LF) caught a big fly ball, then Nancy(P) fielded a tiny dribbler to Ron(1B), and then Rich(3B) grabbed a ground ball and fired it to Ron(1B). In the second inning, Karen(P) got infield balls to Ron(1B) twice, then Scott(CF) fielded a ball and got it to Rich(3B) in time to tag the Crawdad who overran third base. In the third inning, Nancy(P) got another little dribbler to Ron(1B), then EricG(SS) fielded balls and got them to Ron(1B) twice. In the fourth inning, Karen(P) fielded a grounder and got it to Ron(1B), then EricG showed what he was made of (rubber?) with his stretched-out running catch of a line drive, and then Rich(3B) scooped up a hard grounder and got it to Ron(1B). In the fifth inning, Dave(CF) caught a fly ball, then EricB(3B) tagged the runner coming into third and almost made a DP, and Nancy(P) finished the inning by catching a pop-up. In the sixth inning, EricG(SS) fielded a grounder and got it to Ron(1B), then Karen(P) fielded one to Ron(1B), and then EricG(SS) caught an infield pop-up to end the game. Phew! Ron definitely gets the Iron Man award for this game! Nancy picked on one of the Crawdad gals by getting her out every time she came to bat.
Our next game is TUESDAY, June 3. We're playing the Crawdads on HN (dirt) again, but this time we'll be the visiting team (so no last ups!). Everyone please remember to respond to the game reminder and let me know if you'll be there or not.
Have a nice weekend!
