General softball and/or C league rules to review:
-Infield fly, specifically who calls them and when
-Interference (runner vs. fielder)
-How far can you roll in the dirt to avoid a tag
-Who is the pinch runner when no batter has HIT into an out - how do fielder's choice outs work there?
-Is the inning over IMMEDIATELY when the "mercy out" run scores, or only after the play is over (ie does an extra run or two count after the "mercy out" run?)

It was another nice afternoon, same field, same opponent as last week. While the final outcome was a second win in a row for us, unlike last week, the Bruisers took the lead first and never gave it up!

Our hitting was GREAT today. In the first, 13 batters in a row hit and got on base, with 2 outs due to fielder's choice, and then the 14th batter got an RBI which caused a mercy out. Yes, the Bruisers mercied the other team, in the FIRST inning! Randii (with ScottE running) and EricG had triples. The highlight of the second inning was ScottM's two-run home run, where he almost caught up with Karen while running the bases. Nancy was out when the shortstop got in her way at the last second while running. The third inning had 10 batters in a row get on base, with one fielder's choice out and a mercy out, before a good Crawdad catch in the outfield denied ScottM more RBI's. We had a quiet 4th inning, but style points go to Crawdad Tina for her catch of EricB's fly. Our bats woke up again for the 5th inning, with many singles and Earl's bases-clearing 3-run triple at the end (the first of those 3 runs put us at 10-up, but the way we play the mercy rule the play continues, so we're counting the next two runs as well). RBI's were earned by KarenC, ScottM (2), Ron, Nancy, Rob, EricB (2), Melissa (2), Randii, EricG, Nora, ScottE (4), Amy, Ann, and Earl (5).

Offensively, EricG had a busy night, despite sitting the first inning. In the first Rob made the first out at 3rd base, then came the infield-fly double-play confusion in which Karen dropped a popup (but the batter was out when ScottM called the infield fly, which the other team didn't hear) and then we (maybe) got out the runner going from first to second (as she didn't need to run she should have been tagged really). Whatever...In the second inning EricG caught two popups and then flipped the ball to Ann at 2nd base, who tagged out a rolling Crawdad Gary. In the third EricG got yet a nother popup, then rifled the ball to Ron at 1st base, then Jes in short field got the ball to Nora at 2nd base for an out. In the fourth inning came two more shots from EricG to Ron, and then Nora at 3rd base ran down a foul ball with a nice catch. Finally in the 5th, we DIDN'T have a meltdown, with EricB making a nice catch in the outfield, EricG to Ron yet again, and finally Melissa at 3B to Ron for the win.

We have a bye next week, as Karen is off to Rome to herd scientists. Our next game is WEDNESDAY, June 18. We're playing Voodoo Toad Fury on HS (mud/grass), and we're the visiting team. Everyone please remember to respond to the game reminder and let Karen know if you'll be there or not.
