Quotes:
- "Everyone was so surprised I caught that ball, they all forgot how to catch!" - Amy, after we gave up six runs in the fifth inning
- "I'm not forfeiting. And I can bat for every woman in the line up until they come. But I need a runner." - Double Mercy's manager, Jamie, at 5:45 p.m. when they had only six players
Box Score(s):
Per page 21 of the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation (SCMAF) rulebook that the JPL leagues follow, "the score of a forfeited game shall be seven to nothing in favor of the offended team".
So, the "official" box score looks like this: Double Mercy 0, Bruisers 7
The real score, per our scorebook is:
Inning | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | Total | Double Mercy | 0 | 4 | 2 | 0 | 3 | 6 | 15 | Bruisers | 1 | 4 | 2 | 0 | 3 | 2 | 12 |

Y'know... kick our butts if you're able to, but do it without making up your own rules or following only the ones that suit you. At 5:30, DM only had one player. At 5:45, only 6. Everybody except the DM manager knew it was a forfeit. Sigh. They started with only nine players, and sometime time during the game got their tenth player. Between being made to forfeit, and not being allowed to play one of their three (eventual) women at catcher, she probably wasn?t a terribly happy camper, but so be it. Heck, even ScottE was on time! Incidentally, it should be noted that Double Mercy did NOT mercy us. Not even once! Anyway...
Here's how we outed Double Mercy... In the first inning, Simon(3B) scooped a hard grounder and fired it to Ron(1B), then Jose(SS) caught a little fly ball, and then EricB(RF) caught a fly ball. In the second inning, KarenC(P) caught a popup, then Simon(3B) got a grounder to Nora(2B) to force the runner, and then Randy(CF) caught a fly ball. In the third, Jose(SS) caught fly balls twice, and then Simon(3B) got a grounder over to Ron(1B). In the fourth, EricG(SS) started a double play by getting a ground ball to Nora(2B), who threw over to Ron(1B), then Jose(OF) caught a long fly ball. In the fifth inning, Jose(SS) fielded a hard grounder and fired over to Ron(1B) for the first and second outs, and then EricG(RF) caught a fly ball for the third. In the sixth inning, Amy(SF) caught a little fly ball, and then Gerardo(LF) caught the next two fly balls.
Offensively, we did pretty well. We had home runs from Randy, Jose, and two from Simon, and Nora had a tree double. Almost everyone got at least one hit. RBIs were earned by Randy, Jose (2), Nora, Simon (4), EricG (2) and Amy (2). Gerardo was robbed by a lucky catch by the center fielder in the second inning. ScottE gets a Sneaky Feet award for getting safely to second base on his double in the sixth inning. By the way, that last inning did NOT have an infield fly rule in effect, as there was no possibility of a force at third base because the Amy had gotten forced out at third (as explained by ScottM). KarenC, however, should still have tried to make it back to first (of course, where the ball was waiting in the hands of the first baseman, so she was likely toast either way).
Our next game is Tuesday June 16 (tonight!) against the Goat Scouts on the grass field. See ya there! :)
