Bruisers vs. Cinco Equis, June 9, 2004

Bruisers: Jes, Andy, Andrew, Ron, Pat, Eric, Leo, Juan, Nancy, Rick (recruiting points to Juan), BobG, KarenT, Artemio (playing debut, recruiting points to Karen), Shannon, Linda, and ScottE. Also debuting was Eric's new softball (not baseball!) bat.

Bruiser Fans: KarenC, BobT, Randy, Tom, and Anne (Leo's). JohnD phoned in his good wishes from the desert.

Diners at Hill Street Cafe: Ron, Jes, KarenT, ScottE, Andrew, Artemio, and KarenC.

Leo earned cell phone demerits for not only answering his cell phone, but also taking the phone into the field with him, and holding up the game.

Special thanks to KarenT for my nifty Magic Slate, and to Ron for getting the equipment! And thanks, of course, to everyone who provided the volume for the Voice of the Manager last night (did I really say all the things that were attributed to me?).

First, we needed an umpire to help the the Cincos with the rules. Of course, they should have known them before even coming to the game, rather than making them up as they went along, possibly costing us runs and the game. Had your beloved manager had been able to talk, I would have sent those Cincos back into the field to continue the inning. Conveniently incorrect rule interpretations aside (including which gender of player is allowed to run for another player), it was a nice cool afternoon, with lots of money changing hands, and our international flair revived with the addition of Artemio in the very first softball game of his entire life. He did very well, going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Big defensive kudos go to Jes(2B) who caught the last out in the top of the first inning and saved us from being mercied, and Golden Gloves Gallagher(SS) who made a beautiful pirouette catch to end the top of the fourth inning. We had a whole lot of "almost" catches and dropped flies (like ScottM would say - TWO hands!). We also made some good plays like a great catch from Andrew(OF) in the second inning, at least two 1-3 plays started by Nancy(P), and a nice almost-5-3-5-DP. Pat made her pitching debut in the fifth inning, marking that event with a calm 1-3 out to Ron(1B), combined with an awesome Bob(SS)-Ron(1B) out, and a nice, gentle Leo(3B) tag on a runner to keep them to zero that inning.

Our primary offensive highlight was BobG's Grand Slam Home Run Out where he slid into home plate to avoid the tag (which is allowed). The Cinco catcher didn't know until too late that he had to actually tag BobG, by which time he was safe, but then they called him out anyway because he slid. Fortunately, the Bruiser scorebook always travels with a copy of the rules. We explained Rule #9 on the official C League Rule Sheet (which they apparently had no knowledge of), and they argued a bit anyway, finally conceding that the run could count but the out still stood (I think they were either too lazy to go back into the field or we scared them by tying the score in the first place!). Home runs were hit by Andy (go Grandpa!), Andrew, Ron, and BobG, and a triple by Andrew. RBIs were earned by Andy (2), Andrew (4), Ron (3), Eric, Juan, Nancy, Rick, BobG (4), and Artemio. Leo gets the "War Cry" award for his attempt to startle the catcher into dropping the ball as he ran home.

Our next game is MONDAY June 14 against the Goat Scouts on field H9 (fountain field, same as yesterday). We're home team again. I already know we'll be missing Ron and Andrew. Everyone else please be sure I know if you're coming or not. I'll send out the regular reminder tomorrow, and an extra reminder on Monday. Leave your softball stuff in your car!!

If you haven't paid Pat for your T-shirt yet, please plan to do it Monday, or get your money to me some other way ASAP.

See you Monday!
Karen :)
