Oh, what a night! The shorthanded Bruisers (who finished the game with only nine players) had some good hitting tonight and managed to scratch out an early lead and hold onto it to win the game. We even had the Goats in mercy for an inning (altho' for some reason they persisted in claiming mercy outs when they shouldn't have, which confused things greatly). Many thanks to the guys who ran for the guys who couldn't. Good thing all the women were able to run, or we'd have been in big trouble!
Defensively, we did pretty well, holding the Goats to at least one 1-2-3 inning, and no runs for four innings. In the first, Nancy(P) caught a pop up (yaay for the newly conditioned glove!), then Rich(SS) caught one in front of Earl (call it and listen to each other, please!), and then EricB(CF) made a nice running catch. In the second, Rich(SS) fired a ground ball over to Ron(1B), and then EarlC(3B) made the next two outs unassisted. In the third inning, Melissa(SF) was a busy girl, first catching a little fly ball, then catching another fly ball and firing that over to Ron(1B) to double up the runner before she could get back to first. Good heads-up play! In the fourth, KarenC(2B) fielded a ball that deflected off Nancy's back and got it to Ron(1B), then Nancy(P) fielded a dribbler and got it to Ron(1B) who was able to stretch out to catch it and still have his toe on the base, and then Earl(3B) made a nice catch for that third out. In the fifth, Emmanuell(CF) got a late start on a fly ball and managed to catch it while on a run, then EarlC(3B) got a grounder to Ron(1B), and then EricB(LF) grabbed a ball that landed in shallow outfield and threw it to EarlC(3B), who threw it to Nancy(2B) who ran down and tagged the runner. Phew! In the sixth inning, Melissa(SS) fired a grounder to Ron(1B), Emmanuell (CF) caught a fly ball, then Nancy(P) got a grounder to Ron. We didn't actually have any seventh inning notes written down, but recollections say that the outs were an outfield catch by EricB, Melissa(SS) to Ron(1B), and then Nancy(P) to Ron(1B), then game over!
Offensively, everyone got at least two hits (Rich and Brad were both all-for). There were no home runs, but we did have a tree double by Rich, and lots of singles and non-tree doubles. RBIs were earned by Ron (2), Rich (2), Nancy, Earl (3), Anders (2), Brad (3), and Melissa (3). Emmanuell demonstrated why we call him Photon, by reaching first base on a full swing bunt before the pitcher even picked up the ball. :) Things to remember: Pay attention to the runner in front of you so don't pass each other on the bases. Watch where the ball lands before you take off from your base so you don't get doubled up coming back. Don't hit to Keizo. Line drives are good.
Our next game is still TBD. We should have the schedule for the rest of July this week. In the meantime, there is no game during 4th of July week, so everyone will have a chance to heal up from previous owies. Have a great break and holiday everyone!
Karen :)
