The weather was beautiful, but the grass was high again, which made for some weirdly hopping ground balls. The Equis showed up with only two women for their army of men, so they ended up taking at least one, and maybe two, phantom outs during their rather confusing lineup. One thing's for sure, they need to teach their fielders to not stand on the bases or in the path of the runners, given the number of near/actual collisions that occurred. We tried to tell them to educate their fielders, but they didn't. Despite all the Equis rule-bending (like running a guy for one of their two female players because she suddenly decided she didn't want to run and their only other female player was on third base, and flip-flopping on sliding/no sliding/run someone over, and how many phantom women you could have in your lineup), it was a pretty respectable game.

Tonight's defensive highlights... In the first inning EricG(SS) made a grand overthrow to DaveS(C), but made up for it in the next play with a stellar fire to Ron(1B) for the third out. KarenC(P) fielded a ground ball with her glove (rather than her hip this time) and threw to Ron(1B) for an out in the first inning. Rob(3B) made a nice catch of a ball in foul territory without running over any spectators. Golden Gloves Gallager(LF) made an impressive running scoop catch of a line drive in the third inning. In the top of the fifth inning, Rob(3B) and Ron(C) got an Equis runner in a rundown between third and home which ended by Ron chasing her down and tagging her. The sixth inning featured a good catch by Fabian in LF, and DaveS(P)'s very impressive Cy Young pitching during which he got three outs on just two batters.

There ended up being more sliding than usual due to having the Equis fielders standing directly on top of the the bases or completely being the way of the runners getting to the bases even without the ball coming to them. In the fourth inning Andrew ended up knocking over the third basegal standing on top of third base and was called out for doing so (give that girl an Oscar for her acting performance!!!) BobG hit the game's only home run, and RBIs were earned by Juan, Randy, Andrew, BobG(2), Jes, EricG, Jeff, and Pat. Juan gets the "Run, Forrest, Run" award for watching the ball in the first inning rather than running to first right away. Sneaky Feet awards go to Rob for sneaking home on Pat's single in the third inning, Ron for outrunning a rundown in the fifth inning, and to Fabian for stealing home on Juan's double.

Remember this team because we play them again in a couple of weeks. Don't hit to the pitcher or the shortstop, and find a better way to track their men/women if they show up with insufficient women again.

Our next game is TUESDAY, July 12 against the Wild Turkeys. We'll be the visiting team on field H9 (fountain). I know we'll be missing Nancy, EricB and EricG. Everyone else be sure to let me know if you're coming or not.

Also, we'll need to let the league scheduler know who we want to play Pick'em games against soon (there are four in August), so start thinking about who we might want to play again.

Have a great weekend!

Karen :)
