Indeed. It was not a pretty game. At least the weather was nice. :) It started out looking good, and then we had a tragically classic meltdown inning during which we all forgot how to throw and catch, and gave up 14 runs (12 before the first out). This game probably had the least innings we've ever played due to the extra-long third inning but, oddly enough, not the most runs we've ever given up in one inning. It's just proof that "there is no lead too big to give up". And then there was the creative managing by the other team's manager... Sigh. At least we never got mercied. We'll do better next week.
Offensively, we actually did okay, in spite of the third inning. In the first inning, EricG(LF) caught a pop fly, then Ann(C) caught a pop foul over the batter's head, then Slim(S) stepped on his glove and still managed to get a ground ball to KarenC(2B) during which she managed to avoid being smushed by the big guy running into second base. In the second inning, EricB(LF) made a nice trotting catch of a fly ball, then Slim(SS) got a grounder to Nora (SS) for an almost-DP, and then Nora(2B) got a grounder to Slim(SS). In the third inning... after 12 runs scored... the first out was the "lack of women" out which the EE manager "graciously" "gave" to us because "we're winning now" (in that case, the kid, his hit, his RBI, and his scoring run should have been erased), then Rob(3B) tagged third base and then the runner for the second out, and then Rob(3B) and Slim(SS) combined to get a ball to ScottM(1B). Magic.
Defensively, we did pretty well with home runs by Tony (2) and Paul. KarenC and Ann hit tree doubles, but memories recall Ann's was probably center-field enough that it should not have been called a double. She wuz robbed. Anders gets the night's Sneaky Feet award for scoring from second on Rob's single in the third inning. RBIs were earned by Nancy, Anders, Jes, Rob (3), Ann, ScottM (3), Paul (3), and Tony (2),
Our next game is Wednesday, July 16 (yes, I know, that's tomorrow) when we'll be the home team against the Paper Tigers on field HS. Please make sure Karen knows if you're coming or not.
See ya!
Karen :)
