Although the Gravity Fielders scored more runs, technically the Bruisers won by forfeit because at 5:30 there were only two Gravity Fielders, and at 5:45 when we finally started the game there were only seven (5 men, 2 women, we loaned Leo to be a non fielding catcher). Oddly enough, the guy acting as GF manager didn't seem to care much, although he did keep looking longingly into the street hoping more players would show up (which they did, by the second inning).

Bruiser defense looked awesome in the first inning as we put the Gravity Fielders down 1-2-3 with three catches. It still looked pretty good in the second inning, with Liza(SF) making her "OMIGOD!" catch for the third out. Then, we let a runner walk home from third while distracted by another play, and then KarenC pitched the fourth inning... sigh. Somewhere during the third or fourth inning, one of the Gravity Fielders managed to run into Leo's(3B) arm on his follow-through from his throw to first, and got his nose whacked. Lessons learned tonight: 1) watch the runners all the time because sometimes it's not clear if play has stopped or not and they steal home, 2) it's okay to leave your post if necessary, 3) look out for the runners coming at you because sometimes they don't know you have the right of way, 4) always always throw to first base, and 5) when torpedoing a ball to a fielder, aim for their belly button, not over their heads! :)

Offensively, we held our own pretty well. Rich was robbed of a really sharp hit toward short by the gal who made amazing catches all night. ScottM hit both of our home runs, and RBIs were knocked in by KarenC, ScottM (4), Ron, Leo (2), Amy, ScottE, and Liza (2). Ann gets tonight's "hang up and bat" booby prize for being on her cell phone when it was her turn to bat. Unfortunately, when the GFs saw BobG arrive, they immediately called "last inning" which prevented him from getting a chance to bat.

Our next game is Tuesday, July 15, at Eaton-Blanche Park in Pasadena. I'll send a map with directions separately, and it's also on our home page. We'll be home team against Encumber This. Game time is still 5:30, and you still need to be there by 5:15 to stretch and warm up. We all have cars, so transportation there should not be an excuse! As far as I know, we're only missing Mikael and Marc; everyone else should be sure I know if you're coming or not.

See you Tuesday!
Karen :)
