For us, it was like watching our children play little league, realizing that most of us were old enough to be their parents. For the Procrastinators (aka "the Logan's Run" team because their oldest player is 27 years old), they were probably thinking that we must call ourselves the Bruisers because we give a lot of them. That was certainly how it seemed, at least in the first inning when, in an unusual spate of "line-it-to-the-pitcher"-ness, two batters sent really hard and painful shots up the middle, first hitting the pitcher in the stomach and then on the shin, leaving him with clear stitch marks in both places (no, I didn't take pictures). The replacement pitcher quickly figured out to not stand quite as close to the plate. The Bruisers, on the other hand, didn't have to worry so much about line drives up the middle, but rather the itty bitty infield dribblers and the big long hit-by-a-25-year-old shots to the other field.

In the first inning, Dave Seal(SS) fielded a little dribbler and funneled it to Melissa (3B) for an out, and the EricG(1B) made an unassisted out by waiting for the ball to roll to him at first base, then stepping on the plate (begetting ScottM's quote). In the second inning EricG(1B) redeemed himself with a one-toe-on stretch to catch a throw from Dave Seal(SS), and then we had catches by Dan(LF) and Dave Seal(SS). In the third, Ron(1B) made a nice unassisted out, then EricG(SS) made a good catch, and then EricG made a nice tag of the runner coming into second base. In the fourth inning, Melissa(3B) joined the one-toe-on crowd when she stretched to field a throw from Dave Seal(P), then ScottM(CF) made a nice running two-handed catch, and EricG(SS) caught a popup. In the fifth inning, after we hit mercy, it was all Melissa (3B) with two throws to Ron(1B).

We actually did pretty well keeping up for the first three innings. We got home runs by Dave Seal and PaulH, and RBIs by ScottM (2), PaulH (2), Dave Seal (4), EricG (2), Dan, Melissa, ScottE (2), Jes, and Ron. Amy gets the "Run to Where?" award for making it to second base while half of the team hollered that she should take second on an overthrow and the other half hollered for her to stay at first because the overthrow was actually still in-play.

Our next game is Monday July 23 when we'll be the visiting team against our buddies the Wild Turkeys. We're going to try to do a team picture, so whoever shows up will be in this one. Also, we will hopefully get the schedule for the last five weeks of games next week, too, so don't go away just yet!

Have a great weekend!

Karen :)

p.s. I checked on Mark yesterday, and he says he's fine after the two hits. Actually, it sounds like he should be a Bruiser himself after hearing about other hits he's taken!

p.p.s.: I looked up "Logan's Run" to see what color palm these kids would have at 27 years old. In the movie, they were red from age 24 until they started blinking black 10 days before they turned 30. In the book, they turned black at age 21 (okay, I can't imagine Michael York playing a 21-year-old).
