The weather was hot, but the game turned out to be hotter, with the Bruisers rallying to come from behind and win the game on a walk-off RBI by KarenC to knock in Andrew. The game was actually moving along rather quickly until the sixth inning when the Acquisition Allstars (previously known as Encumber This) scored lots of runs, which then required the Bruisers to score lots of runs, etc. Good thing we were home team!
Defensively, we plenty of good, basic fundamental out-getting, esp. between Bob(SS) and Ron(1B). KarenC(2B) and Bob(SS) did a neat little Cora/Izturis imitation for a force out in the second inning. The third inning went quickly with catches by Ron(1B) and Bob(SS) of popups, and KarenC(2B)'s one-handed pirouette catch of a line drive. In the fourth inning BobB(SS) made a great running catch at the left field line for one out, and then rocketed the ball to Ron(1B) to double up the runner from first who, by the time the ball re-entered our atmosphere, had rounded second base was headed for third. Eric(LF) had a tough outting in the sixth inning with the AA batter who fouled off something like nine balls, mostly into the soccer players. Andrew(CF) made a great running snowcone catch to close the top of the seventh inning.
Tonight's heart attack moment came in the top of the seventh inning with the "Whoomph heard 'round the field" as Ron(1B) and Eric(C) collided along the first base line, both tracking a little foul pop-up and not seeing until too late (or at all) that the other guy was there. Caps and glasses went flying, and both guys went down really hard. Eric was replaced at catcher, but insisted on having his last at-bat ("I gotta hit a home run"!). Since he was so insistent, we should mention that he did get a home run, but then almost collided with the AA catcher who was standing right on the third base line as the ball was coming in from the outfield. Sigh. Boys. Ron and Eric both say they feel fine this morning.
Offensively, everyone got at least one hit and almost everyone had at least one RBI. Wow! Home runs were hit by Rob, Eric, BobG, and ScottE. RBIs were knocked in by KarenC (3), Doug, Rob (2), Ron (2), Jes, Eric (3), BobG (2), Ann, Andrew (2), and ScottE (2). Rob bruised the AA pitcher by lining one back up the middle at her, but it's unlikely we'll ever see a picture of that bruise. Eric was robbed of a hit in the sixth inning by a great leaping catch by the AA shortstop to snare his line drive (shiny shorts DO make you lighter!).
For those keeping track, our season record is now: 6-5-1
Our next game is next Wednesday July 28. We'll be the visiting team against the Gravity Fielders on field H7 (sewer). So far, I know we'll be missing Leo and Artemio. Everyone else should let me know if they're coming or not. It's vacation season, so PLEASE remember to let me know if you won't be around so I know if I have to go begging for players. The schedule for the Pick'Em game weeks should be out soon, too.
See you next week!
Karen :)
