Okay, here's how it went. At 5:20, there were only two Gravity Fielders. At 5:35 there were six. At 5:37 the Bruiser manager went to the GF manager to find out if he had more folks coming, and the GF mgr said "oh, you know the games don't even start until 5:40". So, we gave him the three minutes. Then, we gave him more. At 5:45, there were still only six GFs (four men and two women), but we got started after loaning them a catcher, and outfielder, and they left second base vacant. At 5:55 it was noted that ONE more GF had arrived. By the time the second inning started, another had arrived, making nine adult GFs (six men and three women) who took the field, leaving a six-year-old boy play catcher. Sigh. By the way, at 5:20 there were 11 (count 'em, ELEVEN) Bruisers. That's my team! :) The GFs forfeited, of course. 'Nuff said.

All of that aside, it's a good thing they forfeited, because they pretty much kicked our butts for half the game, mercying us in the first and second innings. They hit a lot of sharp ground balls up the middle, and some of our outfielders played much too far back, even when they were told to move closer. ScottM became a single man in the first inning when he caught KarenC's fly ball... after flaking on the Bruisers all season, and then *eagerly* volunteering to play outfield for the understaffed GFs.

Defensively, GF batters picked on the short fielder pretty consistently, no matter who was there. In the third inning, Andrew(CF) made a good backwards run to catch a fly ball, and Nancy(P) made a nice feed to Ron(1B) for the third out. Doug(LF) made a great long running catch to snag a foul fly ball to end the fourth inning. Blooper reel entries include Pat's(1B) wickets impression in the second inning, and Earl's(RF) throw from right field to, er, where?, in the fourth inning.

Offensive highlights include a true C-League home run by Andrew when his infield hit somehow bounced off the pitcher into the outfield (which would given him a double had they actually fielded the ball), but then some other fielding weirdness happened which got him from second base to home. Way to keep running! Doug's attempts to scare the fielders worked on the third baseman in the fourth inning (giving Eric time to reach base), but it unfortunately didn't work on the shortstop in the fifth inning (she doesn't scare easily!) ScottE gets the Twinkle Toes award for beating the throw to first in the fourth inning. Home runs were hit by Andrew (2) and BobG. RBIs were earned by KarenC (2), Andrew (4), Nancy (2), Ron, Eric, Pat, BobG (4), ScottM, and Earl.

Our next game is MONDAY August 2 against the Wild Turkeys on field H9 (water fountain). So far, I believe we'll be missing Leo, Doug and Andrew. Everyone else please be sure to tell me if you're coming or not. I'll send the standard reminder out on Friday, with a re-reminder on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Karen :)
