Yikes. Thank goodness for the Phanton Woman out! It could have been much worse. The Eccentrics, still smarting from the previous week's spanking at the hands of the Deep Space Cadets, brought out their ringers to bolster themselves by smearing the Bruisers into the newly sodded (but still in pretty poor condition) H3 field. The game began with 13 Bruisers and 10 Eccentrics, only two of whom were women. Between the mercy outs and phantom outs, the Bruisers never had to earn three actual outs in an inning on the Eccentrics. The Eccentrics manager graciously offered us another at-bat for the sixth inning ("we get three outs so we won't even come up"), but the game had already been called and the cones and bases were already in, so "um... no, thanks".
It was not our best effort of the season, unfortunately. In a game fraught with poor fielding and throwing (and getting burned twice by Eccentric Kelly's home runs), we did have a couple of defensive bright spots of our own. Andrew and Dave caught balls in the outfield, Bob(SS) made a nice double-play to Ron(1B) and we held them to no runs in the third inning. The Eccentrics had a couple of notable defensive plays, including a good backup by the shortstop to catch a ball that bounced out of the pitcher's glove before it hit the ground, and Kelly catching a hard line drive at first base.
Offensively, we had a really good first inning, which is where three of our for home runs came. Homers were hit by Andrew, Bob, and Eric (2), and RBIs were produced by Andrew (2), Don, Paul, Ron, Jes (2), Bob (3), and Eric (2).
Our next game is next Wednesday August 14 against the Wild Turkeys on field H3.
We'll have two more weeks of games after that, but the schedule hasn't come out yet. I'll let you know as soon as I know, so stay available if you can!
See you next week!
