It was a beautiful afternoon for a softball game, which was made even more beautiful as the Bruisers completed a season sweep of the Crawdads. I don't think we've ever swept any of our multiple-game opponents in a season before. The Crawdads offense contained mostly full-swing bunts, which has been our demise in other games, but we actually did okay with that this time.

Defensive plays went thusly: In the first inning, Jose(SS) caught a little fly ball, then ScottM(RF) caught a big fly ball, then Jose(SS) fielded a grounder and tossed to to KarenC(2B) to force the runner. The second inning contained our biggest defensive highlight when Gerardo ran in from LF to catch a little blooper that came down behind SS, then threw it to KarenC(2B) who boffed the catch, letting the ball fell to the ground. Gerardo then swooped in, grabbed the ball, and dove to tag the runner out, making an as-good-as-unassisted 7-4-7 double play. Oh, to be young again! The third out in that inning was Paul's(RF) stylish catch of a fly ball. In an all-Gerardo third inning, Gerardo(SS, yes, at SS in a brilliant co-assistant managerial move by Jes) caught a little pop up for the first out, then he fielded a grounder and threw it to Rich(1B) for the second, and then he fielded a grounder and gently tagged out the runner coming into second base for the third out. In the fourth, Gerardo(back at LF) caught a fly ball, then BobG(SS) fielded grounders and tapped second base twice for the second and third outs. In the fifth, Ron(1B) earned style points for his spinning catch to make an unassisted out at first, then ScottM(RF) caught a fall ball to right, and then Ron(1B) made a spin-less unassisted out to end the game.

Offensively, we didn't do too badly, either. Jose had a 3.5-base grand slam in the fourth inning, Rich hit a tree double, and BobG hit two. Almost everyone had at least one hit. KarenC, Ron, Jose, BobG and Ann were all all-for. RBIs were earned by Ron, Jose (6), ScottM, Rich, Jes (2), Gerardo, Ann, and EricB. KarenC gets the night's Sneaky Feet award for making it over to third base in the second inning when none of the opponents thought she would go there (really, she was just lucky).

Our next, and final, game of the season is not next week, but in two weeks on Wednesday August 27. We will be the home team against the Gravity Frawgs on field HS (grass) again. We will also take another team pic to pick up folks not there this week, and we will also party at Ron's house after the game. We'll be asking y'all to potluck side dishes, desserts and drinks, so if you have something you already know you want to bring, please let me know. The entree will be something delivered from Georgee's.
