It might not have been a Friday, but the 13th was bad luck for the Cadets with the Bruisers taking their FIRST EVER win over the Cadets (not for lack of trying to give it all back, as usual!). In case you wondered, this 22-17 score is not the highest-scoring Bruisers-Cadets game. In 1998 the Cadets beat the Bruisers in a game with an ending score of 33-32 (in a 7-inning game where the Bruisers DID "give it all back" at the end). This makes our fifth win of the season (five of the last six!).

Defensive highlights include an amazing 6-3-5 double play between Ron(SS), Rich(1B) and Leo (3B), a great running scoop catch by Ron(SS) in the fourth inning, and an everything-to-Pat fifth inning during which she also made an unassisted out by beating a runner to first base. Ann(C) was "foaming at the mouth" (hey, I'm just putting in stuff that was written onto the scoresheet!) to pick off a Cadet runner who kept taking big huge leads off first base in the fifth. A good attempt was made in the seventh inning to run down Cadet Randy between third to home, but we now realize we need to practice that kind of stuff before we actually try it in a game. EarlM(C) then turned to guarding home plate with a bat in hand to keep runners away.

Almost everyone with more than one at-bat (ahem, ScottE!) had at least one hit, and the one without a hit still got an RBI. Andrew hit our only home run, and triples were hit by Eric and Ron. Eric tried to scare a home run out of Cadet 3B Michele by growling at her as he steamed into third base, but it didn't work. Juan narrowly missed being landed upon by Cadet 3B Eric as he slid into third to avoid a tag, which ended up getting away so he was able to get up and run home. In the sixth inning ScottE made a good effort to not be tagged out -- the call from the base coaches went something like "He's safe! He's out! He's safe! He's out!" (he ended up out). RBIs were knocked in by Andrew, Eric (4) (three on a double!), Nancy, Ron (4), Rich (3), Pat, EarlM (3), Leo (2), Juan, and KarenT. KarenC was a very tired girl after running for two (herself and Pat).

Our next game is Thursday August 21 against the Wild Turkeys on field H3 (the field on the corner by the ball-eating sewer). Please be sure I know if you're coming or not. At that game we'll take a head-count for who's coming to the end-of-season party after the following week's game (date still not confirmed, but probably Monday).

Have a great week everyone!
Karen :)
